Nicole Smits

Centre Manager - Bundaberg Early Learning Centre

All staff know the children and families, no matter which room they are in. It is like one big family."

My career in early childhood education and care commenced in 2001 and I started working at Bundaberg Early Learning Centre in 2013. I hold an Advanced Diploma (Community Services) and a Diploma of Leadership and Management.

I have learnt a lot about early childhood education and care in my career including my ability to adapt to new roles, expectations, problem-solving and working well under pressure. I always use my experience and background to guide others and ability to understand and show understanding and compassion.

My approach to early learning is always smiling and being approachable. From getting down to the child’s level and taking the time to get to know their personalities, I can create an environment and level of trust to build a quality foundation which ensures a sense of security.

We aim to provide a friendly enthusiastic, educational environment where the children learn through play. We value the importance of each individual child by implementing the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and kindergarten guidelines throughout the centre. Children learn quality social interactions, communication styles, problem-solving skills, and build quality relationships and confidence outside of their home environment which helps to build a confident learner and school readiness.

All team members are trained in Child Protection. We have an onsite workplace health and safety officer who leads the team and monitors health and safety standards within the centre by completing quality checklists and procedures. All staff are mentored in these areas. You can read more about our commitment to safety here.

Many staff have been with the centre for over seven years. We have a wonderful team culture where we all showcase our strengths to help and guide each other. All staff know the children and families, no matter which room they are in. It is like one big family. The best part of my job is the team – together we are dedicated and committed to our roles as educators and the important role we have not only with each other but with the children we teach, their families and our surrounding community.

We understand the process of starting at a child care centre can seem like a lot however we are here to help you. Tours are scheduled to ensure quality time and care can be taken to tour the centre, room but also to meet and greet the educators that will be directly looking after your children. We show programming and our all in one family app Xplor Home. We are proud to offer support and assistance with completing enrolment forms, steps to setting up Child Care Subsidy (CCS), what to bring, expectations, emotional expectations on first drop off, and more.

Being from the local area helps me to understand the local community and to connect with families. From orientation to everyday communication I ensure I am available at any time to meet and greet families with a smile and welcoming attitude. I like to build quality professional connections with families where they know that I am here for them at any time.

I love spending time in each and every room especially sharing mealtimes (yum yum!).

Our team at Bundaberg Early Learning Centre cannot wait to start this exciting journey with your family.
