Kristy Wheeler

Centre Manager - Welly Road Early Learning Centre (Mount Barker)

“I am a positive person, and I really enjoy sharing that with the children.”

I began my early childhood education and care career in 2007 at Early Learning Services Welly Road (Mount Barker) and transferred to a sister centre in 2008. I came back in early 2021 as the centre manager.

I have 14 years of experience in the early learning sector. I have been the lead educator in rooms of all ages in early learning and a mentor to the educators new to the Early Learning Services or currently studying. In addition, I was an assistant centre manager for four years and enjoyed the role as an educational leader at that service and the assistant centre manager the role.

I started in aged care just out of high school, and through that experience, I learned my passion was working with the younger generation.

In 2007, I completed a placement here at Welly Road. It was here that I decided this was where I wanted to spend my time - I enjoyed exploring and confirming my passion for early childhood education and care. I was offered a role here at Welly Road in 2007 and then transferred to our sister centre in 2008 and remained there until 2021.

I have really enjoyed developing relationships with families and the children to assist them through their early learning journey. I love participating in the messy play experiences and helping the educators create and maintain exciting programs and learning opportunities.

Each child is their own person. Spending time with the children shows us that each child has their own ideas and beliefs. The child-led play-based learning approach allows the children to explore their own ideas and helps them explore their sense of identity while feeling like they belong in the learning environment.

I am a positive person, and I really enjoy sharing that with the children. I enjoy learning with and from the children and going along for the ride of their learning journey wherever it leads us. I enjoy helping the children develop a sense of belonging so that they are confident in exploring their own ideas.

The learning opportunities for the children are endless. The children learn to develop their sense of self alongside their peers and educators. The children can develop relationships with their educators and peers and can become comfortable playing and learning alongside and with their peers. The children have many ways that they can explore their understanding of their world and the wider community.

We have a passionate team here at Early Learning Services Welly Road (Mount Barker). We have our experienced educators working together to mentor our educators who are working towards their certificate or diplomas. Our team is a dedicated group of educators. They are fun and approachable and enjoy coming up with new ideas to encourage the children to interact and enjoy learning opportunities.
