Our Forestville Preschool’s Philosophy
Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that every child is a capable and curious learner. At our Forestville Preschool, we:
- Create a nurturing environment where children, families, and educators feel valued and respected
- Embed sustainability practices and environmental awareness into daily experiences
- Promote inclusive learning that celebrates diversity, equity, and a strong sense of belonging
- Encourage children to take part in decision-making, fostering independence and confidence
- Collaborate with families and the wider community to support holistic development
We provide continuity and stability with our long-standing team, while embracing continuous reflection and professional growth to maintain the highest quality care and education.

Learning goals for Preschool
In our preschool program, we focus on key developmental milestones to support school readiness:
- Self-help skills such as dressing independently, managing personal hygiene, packing bags, and caring for their belongings to build responsibility and autonomy.
- Emotional regulation and social confidence, developed through guided mindfulness practices, group activities, and learning how to express emotions appropriately and resolve conflicts.
- Fine and gross motor skills strengthened through a variety of physical experiences both indoors and outdoors, such as obstacle courses, climbing, cutting, drawing, and manipulating small objects.
- Group learning experiences designed to encourage children to cooperate, take turns, follow routines, and work together on shared tasks to promote a sense of belonging and teamwork.

Weekly extracurricular activities
Our weekly activities make our preschool curriculum engaging and fun:
- Monday – Multilingual classes (French, Mandarin, Thai, Korean)
- Tuesday – Cooking class
- Wednesday – Art and craft class
- Thursday – Music and movement
- Friday – Mindfulness and yoga
We also host monthly family events and regular excursions including:
- Visits to St David’s Retirement Village (including morning tea events)
- Walks to the local park and library
- Excursions to local shops and community spaces
- Participation in local events like the Book Fair

Local school connections
We believe children thrive when they feel connected to their future school community. Our local partnerships include:
- Forestville Public School – Preschool visits the kindy class for our school readiness program
- OLGC Primary School – Year 6 students visit to lead group time and activities with preschoolers
These school-based experiences help children build empathy, communication skills, and confidence in new environments.
To further support the transition to school, we also offer:
- Transition to school statements – Our educators prepare detailed written summaries for each child, outlining their learning progress, interests, strengths, and areas of support. These statements are shared with families and future teachers to ensure a smooth handover into the school setting.
- Preschool information evenings – These sessions invite local school teachers to attend and provide families with a chance to connect directly with your child’s Early Childhood Teachers, ask questions about school readiness, and learn more about how our preschool program supports children’s transition to formal schooling.

We value partnerships with families
At Forestville Early Learning Centre, we know that strong family partnerships are at the heart of every child’s early learning journey. We work closely with families to create a sense of continuity and collaboration, ensuring each child feels supported both at preschool and at home. Our educators provide regular updates through the Xplor app so that families are always informed and engaged. These include:
- Daily group observations and photos that highlight classroom experiences and milestones
- Individual progress updates tailored to each child’s goals and development
- Mid-year and end-of-year learning summaries to share growth and achievements
- Family-teacher check-ins that provide an opportunity to reflect, plan ahead, and work together on supporting your child’s learning
These consistent touchpoints foster trust, communication, and a shared sense of purpose—so families feel confident, connected, and involved every step of the way.

More affordable Preschool program
The New South Wales Government funds preschool education through the “Start Strong” program. This initiative provides financial support to community preschools, mobile preschools, and long day care services.
In New South Wales, preschool has been extended to support both three-year-old and four-year-old children. This means two years of play-based learning. “The Start Strong” program ensures that children aged 3-5 can access 600 hours of quality preschool education annually. The program includes fee relief funding to help make early childhood education more affordable for families.
At Early Learning Services and other G8 Education centres, our preschool program is the perfect way to support your child’s learning, development, and well-being for now, at school and beyond. We use an approved learning framework and support individualised learning in a variety of curriculum areas, including numeracy, oral language and literacy, emotional and social development, and self-regulation.

Frequently asked questions
In Australia, sessional preschools are usually operated by local government, religious organisations, schools, private organisations or the community. They usually run during school term and school hours, meaning the program runs for 40 weeks per year, with most sessions finishing up around 2 pm, over 2-3 days per week.
Funding and fees for sessional preschool programs may vary, and meals are not covered. Age requirements still apply depending on the state or territory you are in.
The preschool program is also offered in long day care centres. Most long day care centres are open from 7:00 AM. to 6:00 PM, Monday to Friday with flexible drop-off/pick-up times to better accommodate busy working families. Long day care centres run 52 weeks per year, meaning your child would not miss out on valuable learning opportunities during school holidays.
Nutritional meals and snacks are covered in long day care centres, so you don’t have to worry about packing lunches.
Child Care Subsidy still applies when your child attends the preschool programs offered in long day care services. NSW’s funding options for preschool can be combined with your Child Care Subsidy savings, making preschool more affordable for your family.
Essentially, there is no difference between the curriculums adopted by long day care and sessional preschool providers. They are both run by qualified early childhood teachers, and they all align with Early Years Learning Framework, focusing on supporting individual children’s development, interests and needs through play-based and intentional learning experiences.
If your child is already settled at a long day care centre, they have the opportunity to stay in a familiar environment, transitioning together with their friends.
Children can start preschool in the year they turn four by July 31.
An annual Government fee relief payment of up to $2174 is available to 4-year-old children who attend an eligible early childhood education program at an approved New South Wales G8 Education centre. To be eligible, the child must be 4 years old by 31 July in the relevant enrolment year and have nominated a G8 Education eligible centre for the enrolment year. Families with children who are 3 years old and not yet 4 years old on or before 31 July in 2025 (the child’s birthdate must be on, or between, 1 August 2021 and 31 July 2022), and who are enrolled at our Centre can save up to $515 in 2025. The pro-rated payment is applied monthly (March – December) to a child’s fees after any CCS has been applied. Children that discontinue in the program or commence after March in the relevant year will be allocated a pro-rated subsidy based on their departure or commencement date.
Yes! CCS applies to preschool hours in long day care, reducing your out-of-pocket costs.
