Earth Kids Early Learning Centre takes a whole-child approach to children’s early education and care. As each child is unique and will grow at his or her own pace, our programs will be tailored to the developments needs and interests of each child.
The educational program is tailored to each developmental stage from babies, toddlers, pre-schoolers and school readiness.
The way our program differs to other early childhood centres is our strong belief in teaching children to have empathy for and to take care of our natural world. We include elements in our programs that support this, such as digging patches, cooking with the herbs, fruit and vegetables from our garden and learning about recycling and waste. we also include education about environmental issues for families and encourage recycling and upcycling at home and in the centre.
Our centre promotes a:
- strong sense of identity
- a connectedness with and contribution to our world
- a strong sense of well-being
- confidence and involvement in their learning; and
- effective and diverse communication skills

Earth Kids won five 2015 Better Business Awards including “Business of the Year”. The awards recognise sustainable business practices across 250 businesses in the Ku-ring-gai, Lane Cove, Willoughby and North Sydney Councils. Other awards include Energy Saver, Water Saver Sustainable Purchasing and Waste Saver.
Our building is eco friendly and was designed to create a unique space that uses natural elements and recycled materials to enhance the children’s and our staff’s experience, while minimising the ecological footprint of the building and the operation of the business.
An 8kw solar PV system has been installed to provide us with our electrical energy needs. LED lighting has been used throughout and energy efficient ceiling fans reduce the need to use air conditioning.
Where possible waste is minimised. Fruit, vegetable and meat suppliers reuse packaging and organic material is composted. The children in our centre are encouraged to separate waste into assorted recycling bins.
We harvest rainwater, which is stored in a 100,000L water tank under our building; the water from the tank is used in the toilets, laundry and the garden. We also have timers and flow restrictors on tapware and a water efficient front loading washing machine.
What is your name?
How long have you been working in childcare?
3 ½ years
What is your favourite part of working at the centre?
This centre is a one of a kind, right from the foundations of the building to the embedded sustainability qualities instilled through the staff and the children.
What qualifications do you hold?
I hold degrees in both in Early Childhood Education and Primary Education.
What are you most passionate about?
I am most passionate about building a gap between the value of early childhood education and the primary years. As an educator and a parent it is important to acknowledge that the first 5 years of a child’s life have the most impact on their social and emotional development. I therefore strongly value the role that the educators play in building these foundations from the nursery to the preschool room. Our role is about helping our children to build their sense of belonging and being within our centre community.
What makes your team/centre special?
I grew up in Turramurra and have chosen to raise my children in the same community, there is just something special about the area. We are very lucky to have such a close community who are there for each other. Our centre is special because we do depend on those community links to help engage the genuine learning experiences that go on in this centre.
What message would you like to tell parents considering your centre?
I believe that this centre is truly unique; it is a purpose built centre with sustainable practices at the core. We want our children to become more aware about our environment and then impact we have, this sense runs through the centre and is demonstrated by the children, families and the staff. Our centre is a reflection of how a small part of our community are working together to improve and empower young children.
